Accountant / Senior Bookkeeper Calgary, Alberta | Full-Time | Permanent | Primarily In-Office Salary: $80,000–$110,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications The Opportunity My client is an established private mortgage and financial services organization seeking an experienced Accountant / Senior Bookkeeper to manage full-cycle accounting for a group of related companies. This is a hands-on position requiring the successful candidate to personally complete daily bookkeeping entries, reconciliations, month-end procedures, internal financial reporting, and year-end preparation. The role is not limited to reviewing or supervising the work of others. The position may be suited to: A highly experienced full-cycle bookkeeper; An accountant currently pursuing a CPA designation; or A designated CPA who enjoys hands-on accounting responsibilities. Key ResponsibilitiesFull-Cycle Accounting Perform full-cycle accounting for multiple related companies. Record daily financial transactions accurately and promptly. Maintain the chart of accounts and general ledger using Sage 50. Prepare and post journal entries and adjusting entries. Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable. Process invoices, payments, receipts, deposits, and expenses. Process or oversee payroll and maintain accurate payroll records. Prepare GST returns and other routine government filings. Assist with annual T4 and T5 information returns. Monitor cash balances, receivables, payables, and upcoming obligations. Reconciliations and Mortgage Transactions Complete monthly bank and credit-card reconciliations. Complete daily trust-account reconciliations. Reconcile general-ledger and balance-sheet accounts. Coordinate with mortgage administration staff regarding: Mortgage fundings; Full and partial payouts; Interest calculations and distributions; Trust-account activity; and Other mortgage-related transactions. Investigate discrepancies and ensure they are resolved promptly. Maintain complete supporting records for all transactions. Financial and Management Reporting Complete month-end closing procedures. Prepare internal monthly financial statements and accounting summaries. Prepare Excel-based management reports. Assist with budgets, forecasts, cash-flow projections, pro formas, and sensitivity analyses. Monitor actual financial performance against budgets and forecasts. Provide management with timely and useful financial information. Identify unusual transactions, financial risks, and emerging concerns. Year-End and External Coordination Prepare year-end working papers and supporting schedules. Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, consultants, and financial professionals. Respond to requests for financial records and supporting information. Assist with annual financial-statement and corporate tax preparation. Ensure external accountants receive complete, accurate, and timely information. Final year-end financial statements and corporate tax returns may be completed by external accountants. Compliance and Deadline Management Maintain a master calendar of accounting and corporate deadlines. Monitor government filings, remittances, annual returns, insurance renewals, quarterly reports, audits, and internal reporting requirements. Participate in monthly compliance and management meetings. Maintain accurate records supporting the organization’s regulatory responsibilities. Protect confidential employee, client, mortgage, and corporate information. Ensure all reporting and filing deadlines are met. Team Coordination and Process Improvement Coordinate with bookkeeping and accounting support staff. Work collaboratively with mortgage administration and operational employees. Assist colleagues when workloads or deadlines require additional support. Recommend improvements to accounting processes and internal controls. Strengthen documentation, workflow, reporting accuracy, and operating efficiency. Perform other accounting and financial duties as required. Qualifications and Experience The successful candidate will ideally have: At least five years of progressive full-cycle bookkeeping or accounting experience. Hands-on experience completing daily accounting transactions. Strong knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, GST, journal entries, and general-ledger accounting. Experience preparing monthly financial statements and management reports. Experience with budgets, forecasts, cash-flow projections, and financial analysis. Strong working knowledge of Sage 50 or comparable accounting software. Advanced Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills. Experience completing bank, credit-card, and balance-sheet reconciliations. Experience preparing year-end working papers and coordinating with external accountants. Experience managing accounting for multiple companies or legal entities. An accounting, bookkeeping, finance, or business administration diploma or degree. The following are considered assets: A CPA designation or current enrolment in the CPA program. Trust-account reconciliation experience. Experience in mortgage administration, private lending, investments, real estate, or financial services. Experience coordinating or supervising accounting support staff. Prompt identification and resolution of accounting discrepancies. Meaningful improvements to accounting processes and controls. Compensation and Benefits The organization offers: Annual salary of $80,000–$110,000, based on accounting experience, education, professional designation, and ability to assume the full responsibilities of the position.
